March is all about Poison Prevention!
It’ll be spring here soon after a very snowy February in the Syracuse area and flowers will be starting to bloom. Bulbs such as tulips will be popping up but did you know that tulips can be poisonous to your cat? This month is set aside for poison prevention and knowing simple everyday items that can be toxic to your kitty can prevent tragic situations. Tulips mentioned above can be poisonous, however lilies, grapes, garlic and onions also can be very harmful. Keeping an eye on your cat in both the yard and in the kitchen can save lives and prevent serious mishaps. I have known of chocolate being poisonous to dogs as growing up, some friends left a chocolate cake out on the dining room table and their Boston terriers devoured it. The dogs did not survive and it always reminded me how simple foods can be dangerous for your pet but not for a human. Chocolate should also be avoided for cats. One of the most common and well known poisons is antifreeze and with a sweet taste, this can lure cats to drink it. Being vigilant about not letting your cat out is most important. My cat is indoor/ outdoor so I am very familiar with where she hunts and wanders around but it still worries me. Simple medications such as Tylenol or sweetener such as Xylitol can be toxic to a small animal. Signs of poisoning in a cat can be drooling, poor breathing, vomiting or diarrhea, seizures, inability to walk and overall lethargy. Contacting your veterinarian immediately is key to saving their life if such a situation arises. If you are unable to get in touch with them, call the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426- 4435 or Cornell University Pet Poison Line at 855-764-7661. Also knowing where your emergency veterinarian is if you need to rush your pet there can be a real lifesaver. Prevention is the best medicine each and every month. Comments are closed.
